A Weekend in Maldon — Where to Start
Maldon is one of those towns that rewards a weekend far more than a day trip. The first afternoon, you’re still finding your feet. By Saturday morning, you know which café has the coffee you want. By Sunday, you’re already wondering when you can come back. Here’s what fills a weekend well.
Walk the Heritage Trail
Pick up the self-guided trail brochure from the Visitor Information Centre at 93 High Street and wander at whatever pace suits. The Beehive Mine Chimney — 30 metres high, the only one of its age and size still standing in Victoria — the old Post Office, the Penny School, the Court House: it’s all within a flat, easy walk of the town centre. The trail takes an hour or three, depending on how often you stop.
Ride the Victorian Goldfields Railway
The heritage steam train between Maldon and Castlemaine runs on Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays. The 45-minute ride through box and ironbark forest is genuinely lovely — especially in autumn when the light sits low through the carriage windows. You can ride one way and explore Castlemaine before returning by car, or do the round trip and be back in Maldon for a late lunch.
Galleries, Antiques and an Afternoon on High Street
Cascade Art is one of the finest regional galleries in central Victoria and worth a proper hour. The antique and collectables shops along High Street are excellent browsing territory — and the cafés do the kind of lunch that makes the afternoon feel well-earned. Maldon is a good town for doing very little in a very satisfying way.
Insider tip: The town is quieter on weekday mornings. If you’re staying midweek, the galleries and shops have space to breathe that weekends don’t always allow.
